The Gospel: Sin to Salvation

S—SIN Every person has sinned and violated the holy and perfect law of God. To sin (I John 3:4) means “to miss the mark” of God’s holy standard.

Romans 3:10 “There is none righteous, not even one.”

Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.“

P—PENALTY Because Creator God is holy (I Sam. 2:2; I Peter 1:16) and just, He must punish those who violate His character and commit sin.

Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Romans 5:12 “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned.”

O—OFFERING The penalty for sin had to be paid so that God’s righteous anger would be satisfied. Only Jesus, the sinless Son of God (Heb. 4:15) would qualify as the perfect offering that God would accept as payment. So Jesus Christ went to the cross of Calvary (I Cor. 1:18) to pay the penalty for sin and die in the place of all who would place their faith in Him. Jesus was then resurrected from the dead three days later (I Cor. 15:1-4).

Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

I Peter 3:18 “For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;”

2 Corinthians 5:21 “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

R—REPENTANCE Repentance means “a change of mind that results in a change of action.” As sinners we must not only acknowledge our sin before the holy God of the universe, but we must desire to turn from our sin and go in the opposite direction (Acts 8:22).

Luke 5:32 Jesus said, “I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”

Acts 3:19 “Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away…”

Acts 17:30 “Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.”

T—TRUST Trust, faith, and belief are all synonyms for expressing hope and confidence in that which is true and trustworthy.

Acts 16:31 “…believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.”

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

John 3:18 “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

John 3:36 “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

S—SALVATION Salvation means “deliverance or rescue.” This is what God offers for all who repent of their sin and trust in Him. The eternal salvation that God offers sinners (I John 5:12-13) is not based on the good works or merits of men (Titus 3:5) but on the basis of grace alone, through faith alone (Rom. 3:28; 5:1), in Jesus Christ alone (John 14:6), all to the glory of God alone.

Acts 4:12 "And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved."

Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

Romans 10:9-10 “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
